Water & Sewer Technician
12 Week Placement with Possible Extension
The Town of Torbay is seeking the services of a qualified Water & Sewer Technician to fulfill a full-time 12-week Temporary Placement opportunity (with the possibility of an extension) to work in its Infrastructure and Public Works Department.
Classification Function
The primary function of this classification is to perform all work related to the safe and proficient operation of the Town’s Water Distribution System, as well as the Town’s Sanitary and Storm Sewer Systems.
Primary Responsibilities
- Monitor and maintain North Pond Chlorination Plant.
- Monitor and maintain North Pond Dam Infrastructure.
- Monitor and maintain both Tyndale and Thornes Lane Pump Houses.
- Monitor and maintain all water distribution systems including hydrants.
- Monitor and maintain the Town’s Five Sewer Lift Stations.
- Monitor and maintain the Sewer Out Fall Station.
- Monitor and maintain all Storm Water Systems.
- Monitor and maintain all water and sewer related items in Town owned buildings.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment.
General Overview of Responsibilities
- Water and Sewer Technicians may be called periodically to work during hours other than regularly scheduled working hours, as such they are required to carry a Town-provided mobile for after-hours monitoring of/response to infrastructure, alarms and/or calls.
- Water and Sewer Technicians are required to be available to work at a minimum of two weekends per month to provide checks and inspections on the water and sewer systems.
- This position is responsible for the performance of all duties relating to monitoring, regular maintenance, and repairs for the efficient operation of all Town owned water, Wastewater and Storm Water Systems.
- Water and Sewer Technicians are able to work safely and effectively around equipment and is able to detect safety hazards around the immediate work area, particularly where fellow workers are involved.

Required Qualifications
- Experience in the Water and Sewer field is required, (installation or monitoring of systems).
- Class 1 Water Distribution Operator Certification
- Valid certificates in Powerline Hazzard, Trenching & Excavating and WHMIS.
- A driver’s abstract and a certificate of conduct will be required.
- Must have a Class 5 driver’s license and be eligible for coverage under the Town’s insurance policy.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Extensive knowledge of the development of Public Works projects and activities.
- Extensive knowledge of all Public Works facilities, equipment, instruments, materials, and supplies.
- Ability to clearly communicate information both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain a professional effective working relationship with other departments and to interact with all levels of employees, Town officials and the public.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion in decision making.
- Ability to operate basic office equipment.
- Ability to read, update and maintain various records and files.
- Ability to understand and follow complex written and oral instructions.
- Ability to work well in a team environment and able to support a work environment based on cooperation and respect.
Physical Requirements
- While performing the essential functions of this position, there is frequent need to sit for extended period of time in vehicles or other equipment, stand, walk, talk, hear, distinguish between shades of color, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, and lift and/or move 20 pounds.
- While performing the essential functions of this position in the field, there is potential for exposure to disagreeable environmental factors, such as outside weather conditions, dampness/humidity, vehicular traffic, toxic/caustic substances, fumes, odors, and unrestrained animals.
- Tasks involve the intermittent performance of physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavy objects (50-100 pounds).
Reporting Protocol
- This position will work alongside the Senior Water and Sewer Technician (Lead Hand) and report to the Supervisor of Infrastructure & Public Works for day-to-day direction and to the Director of Infrastructure and Public Works in the supervisor’s absence.
Rate of Pay
- As per the collective agreement.
