Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for three (3) full-time permanent positions of Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) with the Emergency Fleet division of Corporate Fleet with Property, Fleet & Environment. Please note that an Eligibility List will be established from this competition. Any vacancies that are not filled internally will be filled from this list, which will remain in effect for six (6) months and may be extended, as required.

The EVT is responsible to carry out maintenance, repairs and Motor Vehicle Inspections on Fire Apparatus, such as but not limited to Fire Pumpers, Aerial Devices, Tankers and Tactical Support Vehicles. This position will also be required to support Emergency Fleet during over time and after hours call outs to repair Fire Apparatus and Equipment. The incumbent will work with other Corporate Fleet and Halifax Fire & Emergency staff to repair and maintain safe and reliable vehicles and equipment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Carry out preventative maintenance and repairs on Fire Apparatus and Support Vehicles
  • Completes Motor Vehicle Safety Inspections
  • Diagnosis and repair defects on Fire Apparatus and Support Vehicles
  • Carry out necessary repairs to all types of fire pumps, motors & equipment; diesel and gas engines, as well as hydraulic equipment
  • Required to work on a scheduled on-call after hour basis, for breakdowns and major fires
  • Other duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience:

  • A minimum of five (5) years’ experience working as a Journeyperson Truck & Transport Mechanic
  • Must have a Journeyperson Truck & Transport License (must attach license to application)
  • A valid Nova Scotia Class 3 Driver’s License with Air Brakes is required, and must be maintained while employed in this position (please attach license to application)
  • Applicants with a valid Class 5 Driver’s License may be considered, however, the successful candidate will be required to obtain their air brake endorsement and complete all prerequisites required to take the Class 3 road test prior to an offer of employment being made. The required instruction/road test to obtain the license will be provided.
  • Applicants who are a certified Truck & Transport Mechanic may be considered, however, the successful candidate will be required to obtain a level 2 certification in the Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) program within the first year of the probationary period and must obtain the Master EVT Certification within the following two (2) years. This certification must be maintained while employed in this position.
  • The ability to electrically weld in all four positions is an asset
  • A current Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification is an asset (please attach license to application, if applicable)

Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Experience working on Detroit Diesel, Cummins and Cat engines and other makes
  • Experience working with hydraulics systems
  • Working knowledge of auxiliary braking systems, both Transmissions and Engine brakes
  • Working knowledge of Allison Transmissions; Trouble shooting and repair
  • Diagnosing and repairing electrical systems
  • The ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • A well-developed ability to problem solve
  • Experience with multiplex wiring diagnosis and repair
  • Experience with electronic engines diagnosis is an asset
  • Experience in the preventative and emergency repair of fire apparatus an asset
  • Experience with Motor Vehicle Inspections
  • Knowledge of fire pumps and aerial ladders will be an asset
  • Experience in the preventative and repair of emergency vehicles will be an asset

Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants may be required to complete an employment security screening check.

Please note: Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job specific knowledge. Candidates who are selected for testing, may be tested in a group setting, scheduled at the employer’s discretion.

WORK STATUS: Permanent, Full-time
HOURS OF WORK: Monday – Friday, 7:30am – 4:00pm & Monday – Thursday, 3:30pm – 2:00am, 40 hours/week
SALARY: $98,035.08 – $106,749.31, as per the IAFF Collective Agreement and dependent on Level of EVT certification. A shift differential of $2.00 per hour will apply for shifts commencing between 3:30pm and midnight.
WORK LOCATION: Emergency Fleet Garage (34 Red Bridge Pond Rd, Dartmouth, NS)
