Heavy Equipment I

The Municipality of Tantramar’s Engineering and Public Works Department is currently accepting applications for a full time, permanent position under CUPE Local 1188 for Heavy Equipment I.

The Heavy Equipment I will operate heavy equipment owned by Tantramar, including loaders, backhoe, trucks, snowplows, street sweeper and sidewalk plows. General labour work related to Public Works activities will be a primary area of responsibility for this position.

General Duties:

Under the direction of the Superintendent of Public Works or their designate:

• Perform ice and snow control activities, including plowing, shoveling, salting and sanding of municipal streets, sidewalks, parking lots, stairs, walkways and building entrances.
• Perform a significant amount of general labour work related to Public Works activities.
• Operation of municipal vehicles such as pick-up trucks, salt spreaders, sidewalk plows, tractors, lawn mowers, etc., as required.
• Operation of power tools and equipment, such as mowers, chainsaws, air compressors, etc. when required.
• Cleaning up litter and emptying garbage cans at municipal curbside and facility waste bins.
• Assists in the construction, maintenance and repair of water, sewer and roadway systems, including any labour work required.
• Assist with excavation work related to the construction, repair, maintenance and operation of the municipal water, sewer and roadway systems.
• Assists in the maintenance and repair of municipally owned buildings, including general painting and carpentry work.
• Respond to emergency situations after normal working hours.
• From time to time, participates in the On-Call requirements of Tantramar, responding to ice and snow events and emergency situations outside regular working hours.
• Perform operator related maintenance of all municipal fleet.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

• Must possess a valid New Brunswick class 3 driver’s license with air brakes endorsement, or equivalent.
• Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in operating heavy equipment; in a Municipal setting considered an asset.
• Grade 12 graduate or equivalent.
• Experience in operating ice and snow equipment. Experience operating loaders with plow wings desirable.
• Experience operating bulldozer desirable.

Knowledge and Skills:

• Knowledge of Health & Safety Regulations is an asset.
• Engineering & Public Works Department operations, policies and procedures.
• Must be able to obtain certifications that are provided by Tantramar including, but not limited to First Aid/CPR, WHMIS, trenching and traffic control.
• Ability to communicate effectively with other employees, management and the general public.

Other Qualifications:

• Must be capable of working long hours associated with emergency Public Works activities, such as ice and snow control and watermain breaks. This includes weekends and holidays.
• Must be physically capable of carrying out the required duties.
• Must be capable of working with minimal supervision.
• Ability to understand and apply written and oral instructions.
• Positive and accommodating work attitude.
• Capable of working in a team environment.
